For the Words as Legacy installation, Lisa Hill created a series of hand-made paper slips with individuals’ signatures that progressed over time.
She wanted the slips to stand off the wall without frame or visible attachment. She made small loops of paper on the back of each strip, and I made long, thin wood strips that would fit into the paper loops. Embedded into each strip were small magnets that could be attached to small steel plates screwed to the wall. This system allowed us to carefully place each item without having to work with the item itself, and the magnetic feature allowed us to make small adjustments once the strips were in place.
The metal bars can be seen in the final slide.
