Boxes Amid all my gizmo making, I sometimes fail to mention that I make a lot of boxes. Here are a few of them. Our ship model builder produced this amazing model of a YP - a ship used to train midshipmen. I built this cabinet for it, complete with a button that turns on the cabin light (the interior detail is crazy) for thirty seconds. Little did I know I was shouting out to a 1893 art work. See the slides to reveal the secret... Zoom in... Flip... And scream! This is a replica of the Santee, a ship turned into the Academy's brig. We were having trouble with our purchase card, so I built this with old plywood. I wanted the insets to have a different grain, so I used the 1/2 inch plywood from a packing crate. I'm currently in the middle of a museum-wide video upgrade. I'll do a post when I'm finished in about 2047. Meanwhile, please enjoy this monitor box I built for the Carter and Michelson videos. I made the label holders on our 3D printer and the labels on our dye-sub printer. I did a birch veneer with a blue wash. I don't build many tables. Here's one. At the last minute, it was decided the table should be three inches higher. So I added the upper bit and called it a "design feature". Another laser burner label. I made a little plexi cup to hold the tassel so it would not put stress on the ribbon. The curator did not want the scabbard to hang from the rings, so I made a little wood shelf for it to rest on.
